“Rendezvous at the ‘Y’ Junction” is a not kiss and tell story of Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll... but without the Sex. Unfortunately. The quest of a man in his late 20’s as he trawls the bars, clubs, festivals, parties and gigs of London, and indeed the world, in search of an elusive partner.
During his often pointless search he is forced to battle opposition on many levels. Firstly, of course, his complete and utter inability to approach women successfully, secondly his stunning adroitness to say the wrong thing at the right time, and thirdly the fact that his best friend is enjoying a love fiesta with women lining up to throw themselves at him. This, over the course of a year, gradually erodes his battered confidence and friendship as he has to endure watching his nemesis sleep with a never-ending list of partners whilst he has forgotten what it is like to even kiss anyone female other than his mother.
Starting at an Oscars night party in Los Angeles hanging out with Zoe Ball, a Monkee and dancing on stage with the band Terrorvison, “Rendezvous at the ‘Y’ Junction” also incorporates trips to Sweden, Belgium, Paris, Tenerife, a weekend at the Reading music festival and a lavish sexuality-questioning wedding in Warwick.
It also offers advice on how to get rid of drunks and charity muggers, days spent working as a Voice Over artist for BBC Radio 1 FM and as a TV extra, a naked pensioner, fake whale sperm, getting stoned in a prison exercise yard and watching a TV news reader take a shower.
However, there is a darker side that manifests itself as the enforced celibate days roll on, deep into three figures and rapidly onwards to the monumental 365. The gradual falling out with his best friend and the haunting shadow of S_____, his near perfect ex.
“Rendezvous at the ‘Y’ Junction” A sort of 21st Century “Diary of a Nobody”. A male Bridget Jones in the Danny Wallace/Tony Hawks/Bill Bryson confessional style.
It even has an endorsement from Spike Milligan... “I’m not interested in your private life” ...as said by him at a book signing. (Day 212)
And that, like the rest of the book, is true.
Well, pretty much.
